Former Rivers State governor, Rotimi Amaechi, has criticised President Bola Tinubu’s current declaration of emergency rule in Rivers State, calling it a politically-motivated transfer geared toward intimidating governors who could not assist the president’s reelection bid in 2027.
Recall that President Tinubu declared a state of emergency in Rivers State on March 18, citing extended political disaster and vandalism of oil amenities as key causes. The choice led to the suspension of Governor Siminalayi Fubara, his deputy, Ngozi Odu, and all members of the State’s Home of Meeting for six months. Of their place, Tinubu appointed Ibok-Ete Ibas as the only administrator of the state.
Nonetheless, the transfer sparked widespread opposition, with civil society organisations and the Nigerian Bar Affiliation (NBA) condemning it as unconstitutional.
Additionally, Amaechi, on an interview with DW Africa on Friday, accused President Tinubu of utilizing the emergency rule as a instrument to silence opposition governors and consolidate energy.
“It’s between the president and the FCT minister. The president desires an influence seize. They need to frighten governors who could not assist them in 2027. So, there’s a hearsay all over the place that if you’re not cautious, the president will take away you,” Amaechi said.
He additional questioned the justification for the emergency rule, arguing that insecurity has plagued different components of the nation with out related measures being enforced.
“If the president stated it’s due to insecurity, as a result of they blew the pipeline, what about components of the nation the place there’s insecurity? Is the president saying they need to impose emergency rule on him too? They’ll’t as a result of he’s a democratically elected president. No one can impose an emergency rule on him as a result of there’s severe insecurity within the north-east, north-west — even in south-east and south-west.”
Amaechi careworn that safety accountability lies with the federal authorities, not state governors, making Fubara’s suspension unjustifiable.
“Rivers governor has no safety accountability; it rests squarely on the president. So why punish a person who didn’t commit an offence?” he requested.
The previous Rivers governor accused Tinubu of violating constitutional provisions on how a governor could be faraway from workplace.
“The president acted outdoors the Structure. Part 188 states how a governor can depart workplace, both by demise, resignation, or impeachment. It didn’t say that someday you get up and a person known as the president of Nigeria will throw you out of workplace, which makes democracy unstable.”
Amaechi known as on Rivers residents to withstand the imposition of emergency rule and urged them to have interaction in peaceable democratic protests.
Talking on the continued political feud between Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Nyesom Wike and Governor Fubara, Amaechi alleged that the battle was purely {financial}.
“The struggle between the present governor of Rivers State and the FCT minister is about sharing cash. If not, what’s the quarrel? Nigerians don’t dislike corruption anymore. I’ve not seen anyone on the road querying what the issue is. Can each of them converse to the general public and inform us what the issue is?”
Amaechi lamented that Rivers State was now beneath navy rule, denying its residents the advantages of democracy.
“We at the moment are denied democracy. Rivers State is the one state within the nation at present not having fun with democracy. They’ve imposed navy rule on us,” he said.
