The Social Democratic Party (SDP), led by Professor Sadiq Gombe, has expelled Alhaji Shehu Musa Gabam, Uchechukwu Ogbonna, and other party members following resolutions reached at the party’s 2026 national convention.
The convention, held over the weekend at the Sir Abubakar Tafawa Balewa Stadium in Bauchi, also returned Prof. Sadiq Umar Abubakar Gombe as national chairman of the party for a second term.
Delegates from the 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory approved and ratified disciplinary measures, including the suspension and expulsion of Alhaji Shehu Musa Gabam, Uchechukwu Ogbonna, and other individuals sanctioned by the party between June 9, 2022, and May 8, 2026.
The convention also endorsed the acceptance of resignations submitted by some party officials.
The motion seeking the ratification of the disciplinary actions was moved and seconded as item number eleven, and was unanimously adopted by delegates at the convention.
Gabam is currently laying claim to the position of factional National Chairman of the SDP.
The convention also produced Prince Adewole Adebayo as the sole presidential candidate of the party for the 2027 general elections.
Delegates further approved the continuation of Prof. Sadiq Umar Gombe as National Chairman to oversee the affairs of the party for another four years ahead of the 2027 elections.
Prof. Gombe was returned unopposed alongside 11 other members of the National Executive Committee (NEC).
Other elected officials include Senator Ugochukwu Uba as Deputy National Chairman (South); Dr. Olu Agunloye as National Secretary; Hajiya Mariam Maggie Batubo as National Treasurer; and Barrister Joseph Achille Abu as National Organising Secretary.
Also elected were Araba Rufus Aiyenigba as National Publicity Secretary; Barrister Aderemi Abimbola as National Legal Adviser; Mr. Bello Ado Hussaini as National Financial Secretary; Hajiya Sa’adatu Abdullahi as National Woman Leader; Hon. Daniel Ibe as National Youth Leader; and Chief Lekan Alabi as Leader of Persons with Disabilities, among others.
