Toyin Abraham Shares Message On Self-Worth Amid Culture Debate

Nollywood actress Toyin Abraham has shared a message of encouragement to the public amid backlash over her traditional greeting etiquette.

Taking to her X page, the actress advised people not to exhaust themselves trying to prove their worth to individuals who thrive on negativity.

“Never waste your energy trying to explain your value to people who only understand negativity.”

The post comes weeks after Toyin stirred reactions online following her appearance at the 70th birthday celebration of Debola Lagos’ father. In a viral clip from the event, the actress was seen kneeling to greet Shade Okoya and her husband as a mark of respect.

Reacting to the criticism that followed, Toyin described herself as a true Omoluabi who takes pride in preserving and honouring her cultural values.

An X user had faulted the gesture, describing it as unnecessary and merely “eye service”. Responding, the actress expressed disappointment that many Nigerians now view kneeling to greet elders as outdated. She explained that she was raised to kneel before older people and regards the act as a deeply rooted value she intends to preserve and pass on to younger generations.

The actress had also addressed comments surrounding her interaction with Olori Sekinat Elegushi at another event, where she knelt while speaking to the royal figure, who remained seated. Defending her actions, Toyin stated that she is “a rare breed” and not everyone would understand her personality or values.
