An Emerging Goldmine: Ram Feed Business Booming Ahead Of Sallah

With the cost of rams soaring ahead of the 2026 Sallah celebration, a lucrative investment frontier is opening up in the livestock feed sector. To command premium prices from eager buyers, traders and livestock dealers, eager to maximise profit margins, are aggressively sourcing specialised feeds to fatten their animals rapidly for a high-demand market.

A market survey by LEADERSHIP Weekend reveals that a surging consumer preference for premium-grade rams has sparked a boom in specialised feed formulas. These high-performance feeds are designed to trigger rapid weight gain and optimise livestock health just in time for the  sallah rush.

The special ram feeds are made from a mixture of maize or guinea corn, wheat offal, groundnut cake and agricultural roughages, often supplemented with fresh greens, mineral salt licks and clean water to ensure healthy digestion and muscle growth.

The feeds, according to traders, have become a major attraction in ram markets as buyers increasingly avoid lean animals and prefer well-fed rams despite their higher prices.

Speaking to LEADERSHIP at Kara Market along the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway, a ram feed seller, Alhaji Farouk from Kano, said the business has become highly profitable during the Salah season.

He explained that with as little as N50,000, an investor could purchase sacks of feed, combine them with fresh grass and make substantial returns depending on customer patronage.

According to him, “You can see how the prices of rams have increased, yet buyers are focusing more on fat and healthy-looking animals. Sellers who spend more on feeding naturally add the cost to the final price of the ram.

“I focus mainly on selling feeds because the market is very active before Salah. Once customers come to buy rams, we also introduce them to special feeds that can help keep the animals healthy before the celebration.”

He added that proper feeding, alongside constant access to fresh and clean drinking water, remains essential for maintaining the health and market value of rams.

Industry observers say the trend is creating fresh opportunities for small-scale investors and livestock entrepreneurs seeking seasonal businesses with quick returns during the festive period.
