The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has announced former Rivers State Governor and former Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi, as the party’s vice-presidential candidate for the 2027 general election.
Amaechi will run alongside former Vice President Atiku Abubakar in what the party described as a “unity and rescue ticket” aimed at providing Nigerians with an alternative leadership option ahead of the next presidential election.
The announcement was made on Monday in a statement issued by the ADC National Publicity Secretary, Mallam Bolaji Abdullahi, following what the party described as extensive consultations involving party leaders, coalition partners, youth and women stakeholders, and representatives across the country’s geopolitical zones.
According to the statement, Amaechi’s emergence followed his performance in the party’s presidential primaries, where he finished as runner-up and received broad support from party members nationwide.
The party said Amaechi’s extensive public service experience across both the legislative and executive arms of government positioned him as a strong complement to Atiku’s candidacy.
It noted that Amaechi served as Speaker of the Rivers State House of Assembly, Governor of Rivers State for two terms, and later as Minister of Transportation, where he oversaw major transportation and rail modernisation initiatives.
The ADC stated that the Atiku-Amaechi ticket represents more than a political alliance, describing it as a partnership between “two tested statesmen” with the experience, national reach, and leadership capacity to address Nigeria’s challenges.
The party further argued that Amaechi’s political influence across the South-South and wider Southern Nigeria, alongside his reputation for governance reforms will be a big plus to the party’ victory in the 2027 Presidential Poll.
