The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has welcomed the judgment of the Federal High Court dismissing a suit challenging its leadership, describing the ruling as a reaffirmation of the party’s constitutionally recognised leadership.
In a statement issued by its National Publicity Secretary, Malam Bolaji Abdullahi, the party said the court’s decision further reinforced its position that issues relating to party leadership are internal matters and are not subject to judicial intervention.
According to the ADC, the emergence of its current leadership under Senator David Mark complied fully with the party’s constitution and relevant Nigerian laws.
“This judgment affirms our clear position that the issue of leadership remains an internal affair of the party and is therefore not justiciable,” the party stated.
The ADC described the ruling as a victory not only for the party but also for Nigeria’s multiparty democracy, expressing hope that it would put an end to what it called unnecessary distractions and attempts to destabilise the opposition through litigation.
The party said the country’s pressing challenges, including insecurity, the rising cost of living, unemployment and shrinking economic opportunities, demanded practical alternatives from the opposition rather than prolonged legal battles.
Despite the court victory, the ADC said it would remain vigilant, maintaining that anti-democratic forces were still making efforts capable of undermining democratic governance and opposition politics.
The party also commended the trial judge for upholding justice and awarding costs against the plaintiff and his legal team, saying the decision would discourage frivolous lawsuits in the future.
The ADC further expressed appreciation to its members, supporters and Nigerians for their continued support, urging them to remain united, focused and confident as the party continues to promote democratic ideals.
