New Portugal head coach Jorge Jesus has insisted Cristiano Ronaldo will continue to be selected for the national team, provided he remains fit and available.
Jesus made his position clear during his official unveiling on Friday, dismissing suggestions that the veteran forward could become a burden to the squad.
Ronaldo, 41, came under scrutiny during Portugal’s 2026 FIFA World Cup campaign after the team exited in the Round of 16 following defeat to Spain.
The five-time Ballon d’Or winner later described the tournament as his final World Cup, although he stopped short of announcing his retirement from international football.
Jesus, however, said Ronaldo’s experience and quality remain valuable to Portugal.
“As long as he’s playing and is in a condition to be selected, I will pick him, within certain limits and under the conditions that I consider best for the national team,” Jesus told reporters.
“I haven’t spoken with Cris yet. Cris is never going to be a problem for the national team. Not for the national team, nor for me.”
The former Al-Hilal manager now faces the task of rebuilding Portugal following their disappointing World Cup exit while deciding how Ronaldo fits into his long-term plans.
