POWA Convention: IGP Reaffirms Commitment To Police Families’ Welfare

The inspector-general of police (IGP) Olatunji Disu has reaffirmed the Nigeria Police Force’s commitment to improving the welfare of police personnel and their families, describing the Police Officers’ Wives Association (POWA) as a vital pillar of support for officers serving across the country.

The IGP made the pledge on Thursday while declaring open the 2026 POWA National Convention in Abuja, where he praised the association for its humanitarian work and sacrifices in supporting police families.

Disu, who congratulated the national president of POWA, Mutiat Olufunmilola Disu, on her assumption of office, expressed confidence that the association would build on its legacy of service and expand welfare initiatives for police families.

He described POWA as more than an association of spouses, saying it has evolved into a platform for humanitarian service, family support and community engagement.

According to the IGP, the association’s interventions for widows, children of fallen officers, vulnerable families and members of the police community complement the welfare programmes of the Nigeria Police Force.

Earlier, the national president of POWA, Olufunmilola Disu said the convention was dedicated to celebrating the resilience and sacrifices of police officers’ wives whose contributions often go unnoticed.

Speaking on the theme, “The Resilient Woman: Navigating Life’s Challenges with Strength, Purpose and Grace,” she described police wives as the unseen strength behind every officer.

“Behind every uniform is another uniform that no one sees—the invisible uniform of the wife who waits,” she said, recounting the emotional and practical challenges faced by women whose husbands are frequently absent on national duty.

Also speaking, wife of the president and the First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu commended POWA for organising the convention, describing its theme as reflective of the everyday realities faced by Nigerian women.

She acknowledged the sacrifices made by police officers’ wives in maintaining their homes while supporting husbands whose duties frequently keep them away.

The First Lady encouraged participants to take advantage of the convention by learning new skills, strengthening support networks and embracing opportunities for personal and economic growth.
