Newcastle Land Monaco Midfield Star Bamba In £34m Deal

Newcastle United have reached an agreement worth up to £34 million to sign highly-rated Monaco midfielder Aladji Bamba, as the Magpies continue their squad rebuild following the departure of Sandro Tonali.

The 20-year-old French midfielder is expected to arrive on Tyneside on Thursday to undergo a medical before completing a long-term contract with Eddie Howe’s side.

Bamba has emerged as one of Ligue 1’s brightest young talents despite making his senior debut only in August 2025. His impressive performances last season quickly attracted interest from several clubs across Europe, with Newcastle ultimately winning the race for his signature.

The move comes after Newcastle sold Italy international Tonali to Tottenham Hotspur last month, prompting the club to prioritise strengthening their midfield options. Bamba becomes the second youthful midfield acquisition this summer after the arrival of 18-year-old Dutch prospect Sean Steur from Ajax.

Newcastle had also pursued Freiburg midfielder Johan Manzambi, but the Swiss youngster opted to join Aston Villa instead, forcing the Magpies to intensify negotiations with Monaco.

Bamba’s statistics underline why Newcastle view him as one of Europe’s most exciting emerging midfielders. Among Ligue 1 players who featured for at least 500 minutes last season, he ranked among the top five for duels won, tackles, successful take-ons and aerial duels won.

His all-action displays, defensive resilience and ability to drive forward with the ball are expected to add energy and steel to Newcastle’s midfield as the club targets a strong Premier League campaign and a return to European competition.
