The Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), Gen. Olufemi Oluyede, has described sports as critical to youth development, national unity and peace.
He promised to deploy sports as a strategic non-kinetic approach to enhance national security.
The CDS represented by the Chief of Defence Training, Rear Admiral Abolade Ogunleye, stated this at the closing ceremony of the maiden CDS Under-19 Open Badminton Championship and Super Series in Abuja.
In a statement by the director of Defence Information, Maj-Gen. Samaila Uba, the CDS commended the Mambilla Barracks Badminton Club (MBBC) for partnering with the Defence Headquarters to organise the championship.
He described the collaboration as a reflection of a shared commitment to nurturing young talents and building a stronger nation.
The CDS noted that while military operations remain vital to national security, non-kinetic initiatives such as sports play an equally important role in shaping responsible, disciplined and resilient citizens.
According to him, sports instil values such as teamwork, respect for rules and healthy competition, which are essential for national development.
The CDS explained that the Under-19 category was deliberately introduced to identify and groom future badminton champions capable of representing Nigeria at the highest levels.
He also highlighted the importance of the Super Series, noting that it was incorporated to recognise veteran players whose dedication, mentorship and support have sustained the growth of badminton in the country.
He praised the veterans for inspiring younger athletes through their commitment to the sport.
Reflecting on the championship, the CDS expressed satisfaction with the quality of the competition, stating that the event had achieved its objectives.
He further noted that the finals showcased exceptional talent, determination, tactical awareness and sportsmanship, while also exposing participants to the realities of competitive sports, including both triumphs and setbacks that help to build requisite character.
He also commended the organising committee for successfully hosting the competition, which attracted participants from 19 states across the federation.
He assured stakeholders that the Defence Headquarters would continue to support initiatives that use sports as a platform for youth empowerment, national cohesion and the promotion of peace and security.
The CDS thanked the athletes, coaches, officials, parents, sponsors and supporters whose collective efforts ensured the success of the championship, expressing confidence that many of the young participants would go on to represent Nigeria with distinction at continental and international competitions.
General Oluyede congratulated the winners on their outstanding performances and encouraged participants who did not emerge victorious to remain dedicated and focused, noting that every champion starts as a beginner.
He also commended the badminton community, coaches, officials and participating clubs for their collective efforts in discovering, nurturing and developing young talents for the future of the sports in Nigeria.
