Zamfara, Chinese Energy Firm Open Talks On Large-Scale Solar Investment

Zamfara State Government has opened discussions with Chinese energy company GCL Group on a proposed partnership to develop large-scale solar power projects aimed at expanding electricity supply and supporting industrial growth in the state.

The talks took place during Governor Dauda Lawal’s investment and trade mission to China and focused on exploring opportunities for economic cooperation, particularly in renewable energy. Governor Abdullahi Sule of Nasarawa State also participated in the meeting.

GCL Group, one of China’s leading energy companies with operations spanning thermal power generation and renewable energy, expressed interest in investing in Zamfara’s solar sector. The company also signalled its readiness to explore partnerships in technology transfer, local content development and capacity building.

Both sides agreed to establish a joint technical working group to prepare a framework for the proposed collaboration. The team will undertake feasibility studies, examine financing options, develop project structures and address regulatory requirements needed to move the projects forward.

As part of the next phase of the engagement, GCL Group said it would dispatch an investment and technical delegation to Zamfara to carry out site assessments and hold consultations with relevant stakeholders.

The proposed solar projects are expected to tap into Zamfara’s abundant solar resources as the state seeks to improve electricity access, stimulate economic activity and attract industrial investment through renewable energy development.
