Kano High Court Convicts, Sentences 31-Year-Old To Death For Murder

A Kano State High Court has sentenced a 31-year-old man, Tahir Tanimu, to death by hanging after finding him guilty of criminal conspiracy and culpable homicide in connection with the killing of Shamsu Yakubu.

The judgment was delivered on Monday by Justice A’isha Mahmud of High Court No. 5 in Kano.

During the proceedings, the prosecution counsel, Barrister Lamido Soron Dinki, told the court that on August 2, 2023, Tahir Tanimu and one Joseph Matin conspired and killed Shamsu Yakubu following a political disagreement.

The prosecution presented four witnesses to support its case, while the defendants also testified in their defence.

However, Justice Mahmud dismissed the defence evidence, ruling that the prosecution had successfully established its case beyond reasonable doubt.

Consequently, the court convicted Tahir Tanimu and sentenced him to death by hanging.

In the case of Joseph Matin, the court noted that he was 15 years old at the time the offence was committed. As a result, the judge ordered that he be placed under government custody and supervision in accordance with the law governing juvenile offenders.
