Stephen Baldwin Says He Walked Away From Hollywood After Finding Christ

Actor Stephen Baldwin has revealed that he chose faith over fame at the height of his Hollywood career, saying he never aspired to become one of the industry’s biggest stars.

The 60-year-old actor, best known for his role in the Oscar-winning 1995 thriller The Usual Suspects, said he stepped away from Hollywood after experiencing a spiritual transformation in the early 2000s.

Speaking to People, Baldwin said his career was moving in the direction of major stardom, but that lifestyle did not appeal to him.

“I didn’t want to be Tom Cruise and have to make $100 million at the box office,” he said. “I’d rather be a schmuck from Massapequa, New York.”

Baldwin explained that his journey to Christianity began years earlier when he and his wife, Kennya Baldwin, were told by their housekeeper that they would one day become born-again Christians and establish a ministry. Although he initially dismissed the prediction, his outlook changed after attending several church events with his sister, Beth Baldwin, who had already embraced the Christian faith.

One event that deeply impacted him was a skateboarding outreach programme in Florida, where skateboarders performed before stopping to share Christian messages with thousands of young people gathered at the beach.

Inspired by the experience, Baldwin said he felt called to produce a skateboarding video that combined punk-rock Christian music with an evangelical message. The project, titled Livin It, quickly gained traction, with about 10,000 copies distributed within six months.

Its success eventually led churches to invite the skaters for live outreach events, prompting Baldwin to leave Hollywood behind.

He said he spent the next four years touring with the group, visiting about 125 churches across the United States.

Reflecting on that period, Baldwin said his growing relationship with Jesus Christ and the Holy Spirit became the driving force behind his decision to exchange a flourishing acting career for ministry.
