Presidency Wrong To Attack Catholic Bishops-Amaechi

Amaechi said the Presidency was wrong to attack or insult the Bishops, saying that they are highly respected leaders whose views on national issues should be treated with seriousness.

Speaking on Channels Television’s Politics Today programme on Tuesday night, Amaechi criticised the manner in which the Presidency responded to the remarks made by the Catholic Bishops after their engagement with the President.

He noted that Catholic Bishops occupy influential positions within the Church and command significant respect, adding that many of them hold responsibilities comparable to those of state governors.

“You look at the Bishops of the Catholic Church and insult them. Most Bishops are equivalent to a governor of a state,” he said.

Amaechi maintained that the Presidency should have addressed the concerns raised by the Bishops rather than engaging in a public confrontation with them.

According to him, religious leaders play important roles in society and often speak on issues affecting the welfare of citizens, governance, security and national development.

“That’s where they make a mistake. Cardinal Onaiyekan himself supports nobody, I have had several conversations with him. The only thing that pains him is the level of indiscretion, poverty, and corruption in Nigeria. I just think they are trying to intimidate Onaiyekan,” the former Minister of Transportation said.
