Samantha Morton Says Ageism Is Limiting Opportunities in Hollywood

British actress Samantha Morton has spoken candidly about the challenges of ageing in Hollywood, revealing that she has struggled to secure acting roles despite receiving widespread praise for her latest performance.

The 49-year-old stars as the sorceress Circe in Christopher Nolan’s upcoming epic The Odyssey, a role that has attracted positive reviews. However, Morton disclosed that she has not worked since completing the film, saying her age has become a significant hurdle in an increasingly competitive industry.

Speaking on the Happy Sad Confused podcast, Morton explained that while she is represented by experienced agents and a manager, opportunities have become harder to come by. She acknowledged that there are many talented actors competing for the same roles but believes the industry’s changing dynamics have made it more difficult for women her age.

Although the lack of work has been disappointing, Morton said landing a role in The Odyssey was deeply meaningful because it gave her the chance to collaborate with acclaimed filmmaker Christopher Nolan.

She expressed confidence that her acting career is far from over and hopes to continue performing well into her later years. Still, she described working with Nolan as a personal milestone, saying that experience alone made her feel fulfilled regardless of what comes next.
