Residents around the Apo Bridge area of Abuja were thrown into panic on Thursday night following reports of an explosion near Shafa Filling Station, close to Rita Lori Hotel in Garki.
Eyewitness Jason Akande told LEADERSHIP that he heard multiple explosions, initially fearing it was a bomb blast.
“It just exploded. I thought it was a bomb blast. I heard about seven explosions,” he said.
The incident reportedly occurred near the busy filling station, prompting fear and confusion among motorists and residents in the area, who fled for safety.
Officials from both the Federal Fire Service and the FCT Fire Service later arrived at the scene and immediately began emergency response efforts to contain the fire and prevent its spread.
As of the time of filing this report, the cause of the explosion had not been officially confirmed, and there was no immediate information on casualties or the extent of damage.
Security agencies and emergency responders remained at the scene, while residents were advised to avoid the area to allow rescue and firefighting operations to proceed.
Authorities are yet to issue an official statement on the incident.
