UK Opens 2026/27 Commonwealth Fellowship: How Nigerians Can Apply Before August 25 

The United Kingdom has opened applications for the 2026/27 Commonwealth Fellowship Programme, offering fully funded opportunities to mid-career professionals and university academics from eligible Commonwealth countries, including Nigeria.

The UK in Nigeria announced the opening in a post on its X handle on Thursday, urging qualified candidates to submit their applications before the August 25, 2026 deadline.

“Applications are currently open for the #CommonwealthFellowships 2026/27! Professional Fellowships for mid-career professionals and Academic Fellowships for PhD-holding university staff,” it said.

According to the Commonwealth Scholarship Commission (CSC), the programme has two categories:

• Commonwealth Professional Fellowships for mid-career professionals.
• Commonwealth Academic Fellowships for university academic staff who hold PhDs.

About 40 fellowships are provisionally planned for the 2026/27 programme. Of these, approximately 10 are expected to be available to citizens of Commonwealth countries not eligible for official development assistance, while about 30 will be for citizens of countries eligible for such assistance.

Development Themes

The fellowships focus on six development themes:

• Science and technology for development.
• Improving population health, health systems and capacity.
• Promoting innovation and entrepreneurship.
• Strengthening peace, security and governance.
• Strengthening resilience and response to crises.
• Access, inclusion and opportunity.

Who Can Apply?

For Professional Fellowships, applicants must:

• Have at least five years of relevant full-time or equivalent part-time work experience by the proposed start date of the fellowship.
• Be citizens of, or have refugee status in, an eligible Commonwealth country.
• Be permanently resident in an eligible Commonwealth country.
• Be employed by an organisation they intend to return to after completing the fellowship.
• Provide at least two references, including one from their current employer, unless they are self-employed.
• Not have undertaken a Commonwealth Fellowship within the previous five years.

For Academic Fellowships, applicants must:

• Hold a PhD.
• Be employed as academic staff by a university in a Commonwealth country other than the UK.
• Meet the programme’s nationality, residency and employment requirements.

Nigeria is among the countries eligible for the programme.

Duration Of Fellowships

The two fellowship categories have different durations:

• Professional Fellowships: Six weeks to three months, beginning between mid-February and mid-March 2027.
• Academic Fellowships: Three months, beginning in January or February 2027.

How To Apply

Interested candidates are required to complete the online Commonwealth Fellowship application form through the CSC application portal.

Applications opened at 9am BST on July 28, 2026, and will close at 4pm BST on August 25, 2026.

Applicants will be required to submit:

• Educational qualifications.
• Employment history and relevant work experience.
• Publications and prizes, where applicable.
• References.
• Statements explaining the relevance and development impact of the proposed fellowship.
• A development impact statement linking the proposed fellowship to one of the CSC’s six development themes.
• Plans for applying the skills gained after returning home.
• Expected outcomes and beneficiaries of their work.
• A personal statement.
• Details of voluntary activities and leadership experience.
• A scanned copy of a passport or national identity card.

What The Fellowship Covers

The Commonwealth Scholarship Commission said the fellowship package includes:

• Approved return airfare from the fellow’s home country to the UK.
• Reimbursement of the standard visa application fee.
• A monthly stipend of £2,218.
• A monthly stipend of £2,753 for fellows hosted by organisations in the London metropolitan area, based on the 2025/26 rates.
• An arrival allowance of up to £1,247.09.
• Potential additional funding for eligible short courses and conferences.
• Possible funding for travel to other UK organisations where such activities form part of the approved fellowship programme.

The programme is designed to enable professionals and academics to gain specialised skills and experience in the UK and apply the knowledge gained to development challenges in their home countries.
