Flood Affects 34,000 In Yobe

At least 34,533 persons from 9,845 households have been affected by tropical windstorms, heavy rainfall and flash floods across 15 local government areas of Yobe State since May, the Yobe State Emergency Management Agency has said.

The agency also reported that 11 people had died, while 303 others sustained injuries as a result of the severe weather conditions recorded between May 8 and August 10, 2026.

According to the latest situation report by Dr Muhammad Ibrahim Jalo, Director of Search and Rescue Operations of YOSEMA, 21,363 shelters and rooms were damaged or destroyed, while 468 households comprising 1,120 persons were displaced and forced to seek refuge with host communities or in temporary shelters.

The report indicated that 3,036 households involving 9,373 persons were additionally affected during the period between July 14 and August 10 across nine LGAs.

Damaturu recorded significant impact during the period, with 625 households and 1,554 persons affected.

The state capital recorded 1,140 damaged shelters and rooms, while three persons sustained injuries and one person died. A total of 182 households comprising 351 persons were also displaced.

Karasuwa recorded the highest number of affected households, with 822 households and 3,288 persons affected, while 1,644 shelters and rooms were damaged.

In Potiskum, 634 households involving 1,007 persons were affected, with 804 shelters and rooms damaged, six injuries and one death recorded.

Jakusko recorded 364 affected households involving 1,138 persons, with 816 shelters and rooms damaged, while 13 persons sustained injuries and one person died.

The latest assessment covered Bursari, Damaturu, Fika, Fune, Jakusko, Karasuwa, Machina, Nguru and Potiskum.

YOSEMA said 38 injuries and three deaths were recorded during the latest reporting period, adding that most casualties resulted from collapsing buildings and mud walls weakened by prolonged rainfall, falling roofing sheets, uprooted trees and flying debris.

The agency also reported damage to public infrastructure, including schools and healthcare facilities, disrupting access to essential services in some communities.

Newly reported facilities affected included Turbangida Primary School in Bursari, Gadana Primary School in Fika, Business and Engineering Skills Training Centre along Bulanguwa Road in Nguru, and Adaya Primary School and Arjali Primary School in Potiskum. Mamudo Primary Health Care Centre in Potiskum was also affected.

The disaster has now spread to 15 LGAs: Bade, Bursari, Damaturu, Fika, Fune, Gujba, Gulani, Jakusko, Karasuwa, Machina, Nguru, Potiskum, Tarmuwa, Yunusari and Yusufari.

The agency said assistance was scaled up in July through interventions by YOSEMA, the National Emergency Management Agency, the Northeast Development Commission, elected representatives, philanthropists and humanitarian partners.

NEDC supported 2,038 households in Bade with food and non-food items on July 20.

Cash assistance was also provided to thousands of affected households in Bade, Nguru and Karasuwa by Alhaji Baba Malam Wali, while Senator Ahmad Ibrahim Lawan supported affected households in the three LGAs.

In Potiskum, Hon. Hajiya Fatsuma Talba provided food and shelter materials to 634 affected households in Mamudo, while ACF and YOSEMA planned WASH and non-food item support for 23 households in three wards of Nguru.

Despite the interventions, the agency said significant unmet needs remained across the affected communities.
