Nigerian Afrobeats singer, David Adeleke, popularly known as Davido, has come under criticism from African Action Congress (AAC) presidential candidate, Omoyele Sowore, following the singer’s decision to withdraw his support for presidential candidates.
Davido had on Saturday reportedly posted on X: “No more supporting any presidential candidate. Make we dey our dey.”
Reacting to the now-deleted post, Sowore accused the award-winning singer of political opportunism and alleged that his decision was driven by personal and family interests.
“You guys thought you could have it both ways, opportunism and political hedging,” Sowore said in a statement posted on his social media platforms.
According to the AAC presidential candidate, the Adeleke family was interested in maintaining control of Osun State’s resources while simultaneously maintaining ties with the political establishment at the federal level.
“You want your family to keep controlling the Osun State purse while embracing the same monstrous Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu establishment at the federal level,” he alleged.
Sowore further accused Davido and his family of prioritising their interests over those of Osun residents and Nigerians, arguing that the singer could not claim to support the people while maintaining relationships with politicians he described as part of a failed establishment.
“In the end, it is about protecting personal and family interests, not the interests of the people of Osun State or Nigerians,” he said.
“You cannot claim to stand with the people while simultaneously cutting deals with the political establishment that has failed them.”
Sowore’s latest criticism comes amid an escalating war of words between him and Davido over the singer’s uncle, Governor Ademola Adeleke of Osun state.
The feud began after Sowore criticised Adeleke during an interview ahead of the Osun governorship election, describing the governor as “brainless” and claiming that he had “nothing upstairs.”
Sowore also criticised the condition of infrastructure in Osogbo, the state capital, likening the city to a “war zone.”
Davido subsequently shared a clip of the interview on X and described Sowore as an “Arindin”, a Yoruba expression commonly used to describe someone regarded as foolish or unintelligent.
Sowore fired back, arguing that the description was more appropriately directed at Adeleke.
He also questioned Adeleke’s political record, particularly his alleged support for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu during the 2023 presidential election.
“The real arindin is your uncle, @AAdeleke_01, who had to go back and obtain the equivalent of a GED after he had already served as a Nigerian Senator,” Sowore said.
He further alleged that Adeleke’s support for Tinubu was motivated by the interests of the Adeleke family.
“The real arindin is your uncle who chose @officialABAT as his presidential candidate, apparently hoping that imbecilic political loyalty would allow your family to continue treating Osun State as a private estate to finance your extravagant lifestyle,” he added.
Sowore also accused the Adeleke family of being “oppressive, corrupt, incompetent, and entitled”, while alleging that they benefited from the suffering of Nigerians.
“All of you are the same anyway, oppressive, corrupt, incompetent, and entitled spoilt brats, feeding off the pain, suffering, and sorrow of Nigerians,” he said.
The latest exchange has added a political dimension to Davido’s announcement that he would no longer support any presidential candidate, with Sowore interpreting the decision as evidence of a shift away from previous political engagement.
Sowore concluded by warning that Nigerians would eventually hold political actors accountable for their actions.
“I hope the lessons have been learned. Nigerians should now know exactly who these people are, what they represent, and whose interests they truly serve,” he said.
