NEMA DG Bags Responsive Humanitarian Leadership Award

The director-general of the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), Mrs. Zubaida Umar, has been honoured with the responsive humanitarian leadership award for her contributions to emergency management and humanitarian response in Nigeria.

Umar received the award from Blueprint Newspapers at the 8th Blueprint Newspapers Annual Public Lecture and Impact Series/Awards, held Tuesday in Abuja.

The award was presented to her by the Andoma of Doma, His Royal Highness Dr. Ahmadu Aliyu Onawo, alongside recognitions for other prominent Nigerians, including state governors, the national chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Prof. Nentawe Yilwatda, senior government officials and business leaders.

The recognition highlights Umar’s efforts to reposition NEMA for a more proactive, people-centred and responsive approach to disaster management, with greater emphasis on disaster risk reduction, preparedness, mitigation, response and recovery.

Speaking after receiving the honour, Umar expressed appreciation to Blueprint Newspapers, describing the award as a recognition not only of her leadership but also of the collective efforts of NEMA’s management and staff, as well as its partners and stakeholders.

She also thanked president Bola Tinubu for the opportunity to serve the country and vice president Kashim Shettima for his guidance and support in advancing the federal government’s humanitarian and disaster risk management agenda.

The NEMA boss reaffirmed her commitment to strengthening the agency’s capacity and deepening collaboration with stakeholders to protect lives, livelihoods and communities across Nigeria.

She said the agency would continue to pursue purposeful leadership and stronger emergency preparedness and response mechanisms in line with the federal government’s commitment to building a more resilient Nigeria.
