2027: Opposition Lawmakers, G-100 Coalition Forge Alliance

Ahead of the 2027 general election, the Minority Caucus in the House of Representatives and opposition parties under the aegis of the G-100 initiative have forged an alliance to unseat President Bola Tinubu and the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

The G-100 initiative and the caucus announced this resolution at the end of a closed-door meeting held at the National Assembly Complex in Abuja yesterday. They also announced a national unity summit scheduled for August 31, 2026.

Convener of the G-100 and a former National Vice Chairman (North-West) of the APC, Salihu Lukman, stressed the need for a united front ahead of the 2027 elections to tackle the ruling party.

Lukman said the group, comprising representatives of various opposition political parties, including the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), African Democratic Congress (ADC), Nigerian Democratic Congress (NDC), Allied Peoples Movement (APM), Peoples Redemption Party (PRP), and Social Democratic Party (SDP), is aimed at preventing the fragmentation that previously benefited the ruling APC.

The former Director-General of the Progressive Governors’ Forum stated that the primary objective of the group is to negotiate a common platform to ensure a cohesive challenge to the current APC-led administration of Tinubu.

Lukman said opposition parties are currently too fragmented to be effective, adding that the main objective was to avoid repeating the 2023 election scenario, which they believe handed victory to the ruling APC.

“As opposition parties, we seem to be fragmented, and if we continue the way we are going, we are almost going to repeat the 2023 scenario, and it’s almost like a case of handing over victory to the ruling party, and then we go back to square one.

“And we feel, given the situation the country is facing today, the country cannot afford another four years of APC government, and that whatever it will take to get our leaders back together to do the needful and begin to work together to ensure victory in the 2027 election, we need to do it,” he said.

Lukman disclosed that the group has consulted with presidential candidates, running mates, and national chairmen of the six involved parties, including ADC, NDC, PDP, APM, PRP, and SDP.

“We presented our concern and insisted that the only pathway to victory is for leaders to come together and begin to negotiate a common front on the basis of which the 2027 election will be contested, and like we reported in the press statement we issued, we got very cordial responses from almost all the leaders.

“We come to you again to say we have shifted the summit to August 31. We don’t want to proceed alone. There are many Nigerians who have indicated good support, and we want to work with everybody. This is not about us; it’s about the country.

“We are appealing to all leaders who have agreed; we should all come and join hands together and ensure that we support our leaders from the different parties to come together and agree to work towards having a common front for the 2027 election, in order to guarantee victory against APC,” he added.

For his part, Minority Leader of the House, Hon. Fred Agbedi (PDP, Bayelsa), said the opposition caucus was already engaged in consultations with opposition parties, presidential candidates, and other political stakeholders as part of efforts to strengthen opposition politics ahead of the 2027 polls.

Agbedi said the G-100 initiative was consistent with the position already taken by the Minority Caucus and therefore provided an opportunity for both groups to coordinate their efforts.

“When we saw the G-100, it matched our position. And so this is a marriage of convenience, and we believe that we have keyed in already, individually and collectively, as opposition parties in the House of Representatives.”

He assured the delegation that the caucus would work with the G-100, both collectively and through individual lawmakers.

The Minority Leader further confirmed that the caucus had nominated members to participate in the technical committee established to develop the framework for the proposed opposition collaboration.

Agbedi also confirmed the August 31 opposition summit, saying the gathering would provide an opportunity for opposition stakeholders to unveil further details of their proposed collaboration and strategy for the 2027 elections.

“Finally, we affirmed the opposition summit that will be held on August 31, where further details of how the opposition will work together and wrestle power in 2027 will be unveiled.

“The last time we met, we told you that you are welcome to a friendly point because, as minorities, that was our objective, and because of that, a number of us haven’t travelled since we went on vacation because we decided that we must go around all the parties and the presidential candidates and the other members to make sure that we come together and create a strong and vibrant opposition for the 2027 election.

“This is a marriage of convenience, and we believe that we have keyed in already, individually and collectively, as opposition parties in the House of Representatives. In particular, we assure you that we’re going to work together.

“The minority leadership is here with you, and we ensure that we work together to salvage Nigeria,” he added.

Also, a former member of the House, Hon. Sergius Ogun, stressed the importance of the opposition uniting against the ruling party in the 2027 general election.

“Like he rightly said, the weakest of us can defeat this president. But if we come together, it will be swifter, sweeter, and more pleasurable, and we feel we should bring the house together and have a common front.

“When we can speak with one voice, because today we have only one individual and one party tormenting this whole country, and the earlier we come together as one body and speak for Nigerians, the better for all of us. That’s basically the purpose of this group,” he stated.
