Masai Russell Breaks Tobi Amusan’s World Record In Zurich  

American Olympic champion Masai Russell, has broken Nigerian Tobi Amusan’s world record in the women’s 100m hurdles after producing a stunning performance at the Diamond League meeting in Zurich on Thursday.

Russell, 26, stormed to victory in 12.09 seconds to shave 0.03 seconds off the previous world record of 12.12 seconds, which Amusan set at the 2022 World Championships in Eugene, Oregon. The Nigerian’s record had stood for four years.

Amusan finished second in the race with a season’s best of 12.23 seconds, while Russell’s previous personal best stood at 12.14 seconds.

The American seized control of the race early, getting off to a strong start and maintaining her lead to cross the finish line ahead of the Nigerian hurdler.

Amusan, who became the first Nigerian athlete to set a world record in athletics when she ran 12.12 seconds in Eugene in 2022, saw her long-standing mark surpassed by Russell’s historic run.

“Competing in a world record race is amazing,” said Amusan, who came second in a season’s best of 12.23sec.

“I came out here and I did my best and I am happy with this SB.”
