2027 Campaigns Won’t Stop NASS From Legislative Duties — Akpabio

President of the Senate, Senator Godswill Akpabio, has assured Nigerians that political campaigns ahead of the 2027 general elections will not disrupt the legislative activities of the National Assembly.

Akpabio gave the assurance while speaking with newsmen at the Presidential Wing of the Victor Attah International Airport, Uyo, Akwa Ibom State.

The Senate President had earlier convened a meeting of All Progressives Congress (APC) critical stakeholders in Akwa Ibom North-West Senatorial District, where President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, Akpabio and Governor Umo Eno received unanimous endorsements for their respective bids to return to office in 2027.

According to a statement issued by his Special Assistant on Media, Jackson Udom, and made available to newsmen, Akpabio said electioneering and legislative responsibilities were separate activities that could be effectively managed without one affecting the other.

He stressed that lawmakers were elected to serve for four years and were expected to discharge their constitutional responsibilities throughout their tenure.

“We are elected for four years and we are going to work for four years. Anybody that is walking on the tiny rope must be able to do the balancing act,” he said.

The Senate President acknowledged that political campaigns would commence soon but said lawmakers could schedule campaign activities around their legislative responsibilities.

“We are politicians and campaigns would start very soon. Campaigns can be fixed in the afternoons or evenings while we do our work in the mornings.

“It is not a problem at all. It is not everybody that will go for campaign at the same time because we belong to different political parties,” Akpabio said.

He assured Nigerians that the National Assembly would remain focused on its core responsibility of lawmaking and addressing the needs of citizens.

“Nothing will affect legislation. We will continue to make laws to take care of the needs of the people. It has never affected the work of the parliament,” he stressed.

Akpabio’s comments come as political activities and preparations for the 2027 general elections intensify across the country.
