BREAKING: Plateau Shuts Schools Over Diphtheria Outbreak

The Plateau State Government has ordered the immediate temporary closure of all public and private primary and secondary schools across the state following suspected cases of diphtheria in four local government areas.

The directive, announced on Saturday by the Commissioner for Information, Joyce Ramnap, takes effect from Monday, September 7, 2026, and will remain in force until further notice.

The government said the measure was approved under the leadership of Governor Caleb Mutfwang as part of efforts to prevent further spread of the infection, with suspected cases reported in Jos North, Wase, Jos South and Bassa Local Government Areas.

“The directive… is taking preventative measures against the Diphtheria Infection outbreak of suspected cases in some parts of the State, notably Jos North, Wase, Jos South & Bassa Local Government Areas,” the statement said.

It directed schools that had already resumed for the new academic term to also suspend activities from Monday.

“Accordingly, schools that have already resumed academic activities are also directed to close from Monday, September 7, 2026, and remain closed until further notice,” the government added.

Parents, teachers, school proprietors and administrators were urged to comply with the directive and ensure that pupils and students remain at home during the period.

“Furthermore, school proprietors, administrators, teachers, parents and guardians are to comply fully with the directive and ensure that students and pupils remain safely at home throughout the period as part of measures to ensure the safety and wellbeing of pupils, students, teaching and non-teaching staff during the period under review,” the statement stressed.

The closure comes amid growing concern over suspected diphtheria cases in the affected communities, with health authorities activating surveillance and response measures.

The state government said the measures were aimed at limiting exposure among children while health workers intensify contact tracing, vaccination mop-up and other response activities in the affected areas.

It assured residents that further information on the situation and the resumption of academic activities would be communicated as developments unfold.

“The Government appreciates the understanding and full cooperation of all stakeholders as it continues to take appropriate measures in the best interest of the people of Plateau State,” the statement said.

“Further information on the resumption of academic activities will be communicated to the public in due course,” it added.
