Singer Pink has sparked controversy after weighing in on Macklemore’s politically charged performance while opening for Ed Sheeran in New Jersey.
Macklemore performed at Sheeran’s concerts at MetLife Stadium on September 4 and 5, where he wore a keffiyeh, expressed support for Palestinians and performed his protest song Hind’s Hall. Pro-Palestinian imagery was also displayed on screens during his set.
Pink subsequently reshared a post from StopAntisemitism on her Instagram Story. The post criticised Macklemore’s appearance and called for concertgoers to receive apologies and refunds.
Her decision to amplify the message divided social media users. While some agreed that fans attending a Sheeran concert may not have expected political messaging from an opening act, others criticised Pink for challenging Macklemore’s decision to use the stage to express his views.
The controversy has also raised questions about Sheeran’s position. His official tour listings continue to include Macklemore as a supporting act for upcoming US dates, and there has been no announcement of refunds or plans to remove him from the tour.
Pink’s repost has therefore added another layer to an already heated debate over political expression at live music events.
