Chairman of the union, Dr. Enaruna Edosa, said the branch executive committee would hold an emergency meeting before convening a congress of members to decide on the appropriate response.
Speaking with LEADERSHIP on Tuesday, Edosa said the union would be guided by the resolutions reached by its members.
“We are going to meet as the executive committee now to discuss the matter, and afterwards we will convene a congress where all members will participate and decide the way forward. It is our members who will guide us,” he said.
When contacted for reaction, the University of Benin’s Public Relations Officer, Dr. Benedicta Ehanire, declined to comment on the issue, saying the leadership of ASUU was in a better position to speak on the matter.
The development follows widespread dissatisfaction among members of the union after they received only half of their August salaries, with no prior explanation from the university management.
The payment, which came barely weeks before students are expected to resume for the new academic session, has reportedly placed many lecturers under financial pressure, particularly in meeting school-related expenses for their children and wards.
LEADERSHIP had earlier reported that while academic staff received half salaries for August, non-academic workers were reportedly paid their full salaries, a development that has further heightened concerns within the university community.
The outcome of the ASUU congress is expected to determine the union’s next course of action over the salary controversy.
