Igala Diaspora Mourns Former Kogi Governor Idris, Elects New Leaders

The newly elected leadership of the Igala Diaspora Association in the United States (US) has expressed condolences to the family, government and people of Kogi State, as well as the Atta Igala, over the death of former Kogi State governor, Alhaji Ibrahim Idris, popularly known as “Omachi Atta-Igala Wali.”
Idris, who was 77, died in a London hospital.

In a statement issued to journalists yesterday in Abuja, the association’s new president, Bishop Moses Adejoh, and secretary-general, Mr Arome Oyibo, recalled the former governor’s relationship with the Kogi diaspora during his tenure in office.

The association said Idris demonstrated a commitment to engaging Kogi indigenes in the diaspora, recalling that he personally participated in its conference in Cincinnati, Ohio, in 2006 while serving as governor.

It also credited his administration with facilitating the association’s donation of multi-million-naira digital equipment and academic resources in 2007.

The new leadership prayed for the repose of Idris’ soul and offered condolences to his family, the government and people of Kogi State and the Atta Igala.

The condolence message followed the association’s 25th Annual Conference and Gala, held in Omaha, Nebraska, from September 4 to 6, 2026, where a new executive was elected.

The conference was also marked by a proclamation issued by the Mayor of Omaha, Nebraska, John Ewing, in recognition of the Igala diaspora community and its contributions to society.

The three-day gathering attracted delegates from Igala chapters across the United States and focused on the theme, “Beyond Borders and Crossroads: Reimagining Partnerships to Lead Our Collective Igala Future.”

The mayor’s proclamation recognised the historical significance of the Igala Kingdom and its longstanding role in trade and civic life in the sub-Saharan region, as well as the contributions of Igala professionals and younger generations to American society.

The proclamation also acknowledged the contributions of the Atta Igala, His Royal Majesty Mathew Alaji Oguche Akpa II.

The conference featured tours and a gala celebrating Nigerian and Igala heritage through traditional cuisine, attire and dance.

Delegates at the conference elected a new executive to lead the Igala diaspora association in the United States.

Bishop Moses Adejoh, emerged as President, while Mr. Godwin Ilabija was elected Vice President and Mr. Arome Oyibo Secretary-General.

Other members of the executive are Mrs. Cordelia Ewah, Financial Secretary; Mrs. Martina Agba, Treasurer; Mr. Omakoji Idakwoji, Public Relations Officer; Ms. Gold Mathew, Youth Leader; and Mr. Sunny Onoja, Social Secretary.

The new president urged members of the Igala community to embrace uncommon sacrifices and strengthen partnerships as part of efforts to advance the interests and future of the Igala people.

The new leadership said it would build on the association’s existing engagements and contributions while strengthening collaboration among Igala communities in Nigeria and the United States.
