Nigerian dancer Benjamin Daniel has completed a seven-day dance marathon in Lagos as he seeks to set a new Guinness World Records mark for the longest dance marathon by an individual.
Daniel, 33, began the endurance challenge at Freedom Park last Tuesday and continued dancing beyond the seven-day milestone, eventually stopping around midday on Tuesday. His team said the performance lasted more than 176 hours, with the timer recording seven days, eight hours, 32 minutes and 59 seconds.
The dancer is attempting to surpass the current record of 127 hours.
Guinness World Records has confirmed that Daniel’s application is active, but the organisation has not yet recognised the attempt as an official record. His evidence must first undergo the organisation’s review and verification process.
After completing the marathon, Daniel was taken to hospital for a medical check-up.
The challenge attracted supporters to Freedom Park, where crowds gathered during the week to watch and encourage him.
Daniel Showcases Nigerian Dance And Music
Daniel, who has spent 18 years as a professional dancer, used the marathon to highlight different Nigerian dance traditions and musical styles.
Afrobeats featured prominently during the performance, alongside fuji, jazz and zouk. He also incorporated traditional Nigerian clothing into the challenge, appearing in outfits including agbada and dashiki.
Whether Daniel’s performance qualifies for a new Guinness World Records title will be determined after the organisation completes its verification of the submitted evidence.
