UK Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood has indicated that the British government may alter proposed migration reforms that would extend the waiting period for foreign workers seeking permanent residence.

Speaking at the Labour Party conference in Liverpool, Mahmood addressed rising concerns from cabinet colleagues and trade unions regarding the fairness of the proposed changes to indefinite leave to remain. She assured that the government aims to strike a balanced approach that respects both legal migrants and British citizens.

Under the initial proposal, permanent residency status would require migrants to demonstrate a sustained, long-term commitment to the country before qualifying. However, growing pushback, particularly regarding the impact on essential sectors like social care, has prompted ministers to reconsider the strictness of the rollout.
