The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Bayelsa State has criticised the state government over the scale of activities marking the 30th anniversary of the state, saying more attention should be given to the economic difficulties facing residents.
The party said many Bayelsans were still dealing with rising living costs, unemployment and poverty, arguing that the anniversary should also provide an opportunity for the government to address challenges affecting ordinary citizens.
In a statement signed by its State Publicity Secretary, Hon. Ikaebimo Mark, the PDP said the government should focus more on completing abandoned projects, creating jobs and expanding economic opportunities for residents.

The party specifically raised concerns over the Bayelsa Tower Hotel project in Yenagoa, which it said had remained uncompleted for about 22 years despite public funds reportedly committed to it.
According to Mark, the project and other abandoned projects across the state should form part of the government’s development priorities rather than being left unattended while resources are committed to anniversary activities.
“At 30, Bayelsa deserves more than pomp and pageantry. It deserves accountability, completed projects, jobs, economic opportunities and a government that prioritises the welfare of its people,” he said.

The Publicity Secretary argued that the anniversary should be used to assess the state’s development since its creation in 1996 and identify areas requiring urgent attention.
He said the condition of residents should remain central to any discussion about the state’s achievements, particularly at a time when many families were facing economic pressure.
Mark also called on the state government to provide greater transparency on public spending and explain how resources allocated to development projects and other programmes were being utilised.
“The government must reflect on the real condition of Bayelsans and redirect public resources and attention towards addressing the pressing needs of the people,” he said.

He maintained that celebrating the state’s 30th anniversary should not only be about ceremonies but should also involve taking stock of projects, employment, infrastructure and the living conditions of residents.
Mark urged the government to prioritise the completion of projects that could contribute to economic activity and provide direct benefits to the people.
