Equity trading activity on the Nigerian Exchange Limited (NGX) closed in the red on Wednesday, September 30, 2026, with the All-Share Index (ASI) contracting by 701.53 points to close at 251,211.67 points, compared to 251,913.20 points registered on Tuesday, September 29.
Financial stocks faced downward pressure as the equities market capitalization shed N425.73 billion, declining from N163.53 trillion (N163,530,505,261,715.28) to N163.10 trillion (N163,104,771,967,056.66).
Despite the low overall performance, trading volume was high.
A total of 1.03 billion (1,035,351,484) shares were exchanged across 44,398 deals on the equities market.
The day’s activity chart by volume was spearheaded by VFD Group Plc, which recorded 367,316,642 shares across 426 trades.
Among other boards, the Growth Board logged 8,826,396 shares in 1,497 deals, the Non-Interest Finance Board executed 4,844,447 shares across 1,034 deals, and REITs & Closed-End Funds generated 2,356,452 shares in 584 deals.
The NGX Industrial Goods Index led the gainers among key sectors, advancing from 10,372.27 points to 10,440.27 points.
Financial sub-sectors closed in negative territory as the NGX Banking Index fell to 2,712.10 points from 2,727.81 points, and the NGX Insurance Index dropped to 1,087.10 points from 1,098.22 points.
Broader thematic indicators also tracked downward, with the NGX Pension Index declining to 13,304.25 points from 13,385.02 points, the benchmark NGX 30 Index decreasing to 9,241.53 points from 9,270.51 points, and the NGX Lotus Islamic Index sliding to 23,434.63 points from 23,573.43 points.
Market breadth finished on a negative tilt as 28 equities sustained price drops against 25 equities that recorded price gains.
Wednesday’s market performance follows Tuesday’s downward pressure that saw the Nigerian equity market capitalization shed N468.63 billion to close at N163.530 trillion.
This is the second consecutive time the market cap will drop in the last one week.
