Court Remands Alleged Fraudster Over Alleged N307m Tax Scam

Justice Deinde Dipeolu of the Federal High Court in Lagos has remanded alleged fraudster Solomon Ejiofor to the custody of the Ikoyi Correctional Centre over an alleged N307 million tax fraud.

Justice Dipeolu ordered that Ejiofor be kept behind bars after he was arraigned before the court by the Nigeria Police Force’s Directorate of Legal Services on a four-count charge bordering on obtaining money by false pretence, stealing, conspiracy and alleged cybercrime-related offences.

The defendant was arraigned in Charge No. FHC/LAG/CR/794/2026.

The prosecution, led by Assistant Superintendent of Police Augustine Nwabueze, alleged that Ejiofor and others still at large, between January 2020 and September 2025/2026, represented himself as a tax manager with Forvis Mazars, acting on behalf of Lotus Travels Services Limited.

Nwabueze also claimed that the defendant allegedly collected N307 million through two Zenith Bank accounts, purportedly for the payment of taxes to the relevant revenue authorities.

The police prosecutor further alleged that, instead of remitting the funds to pay the company’s taxes, Ejiofor diverted the money for his personal use, leaving the company with substantial debts and tax liabilities.

The four-count charge includes allegations of obtaining money by false pretence under the Advance Fee Fraud and Other Fraud Related Offences Act; fraudulent conversion under the Criminal Code; stealing; and conspiracy relating to the alleged manipulation of financial records and tax remittances under the Cybercrimes Act, as amended in 2024.

The defendant, however, pleaded not guilty to all four counts.

Based on his plea, the prosecutor requested a trial date and urged the court to remand the defendant in custody pending trial.

However, the defence counsel informed the court that a bail application had already been filed and served on the prosecution.

He said the defence was ready to move the application.

Nwabueze opposed the immediate hearing of the application, on the ground that he was only served with a copy on the morning of the proceedings and needed time to study it and file a response.

After listening to the lawyers, Justice Dipeolu ordered Ejiofor’s remand and adjourned the matter until October 26 for the hearing of the bail application and further proceedings.
