Nigeria’s Amos Dangut has assumed office as the new Registrar/Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the West African Examinations Council (WAEC), becoming the 14th Registrar of the regional examination body.
Dangut officially took over on October 1, 2026, according to a statement by the Head of Public Affairs at WAEC Headquarters, Accra, Ghana, Demianus Ojijeogu.
He was appointed for a five-year tenure running from October 2026 to September 2031, succeeding Pateh Bah of The Gambia.
Before his new appointment, Dangut served as Head of the WAEC National Office in Nigeria, a position he assumed on October 2, 2023.

Born on October 2, 1967, Dangut holds a Bachelor of Agriculture in Animal Production, a Master of Science in Animal Science, a Doctor of Philosophy in Animal Science and a Master of Education in Administration and Planning.
His career in education began in 1994 when he joined St Louis College, Jos, where he served as a WAEC examiner. He subsequently joined WAEC in 1998.
Dangut has since served in various capacities within the council, including Assistant Registrar/Subject Officer, Test Development Division, WAEC, Ogba, Lagos; Senior Assistant Registrar/Head of Examinations Security and Deputy to the Branch Controller at the Uyo and Bauchi branch offices; and Senior Assistant Registrar/Branch Controller, Yola Branch Office.

The council said he had, for more than two decades, leveraged information and communications technology to improve processes in test development, post-test activities and examination administration.
“Throughout his career, Dangut has demonstrated integrity, transparency, diligence, and a strong commitment to service,” WAEC said.
The Council said his professional qualities were recognised in a commendation from the Nigeria Examinations Committee for his handling of examination matters from 2000 to 2006, as well as an Award for Meritorious Service presented by the Ondo State Government and Akoko South Local Government during his National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) service.
As Head of the National Office, Dangut served on the governing boards of the Nigerian Educational Research and Development Council (NERDC), Joint Universities Preliminary Examinations Board (JUPEB), Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB), and Grange Educational Foundation.
He also represented WAEC at education policy forums, including the Joint Consultative Committee on Education and the National Council on Education.
According to WAEC, Dangut championed innovations aimed at strengthening examination delivery, security, integrity and efficiency during his tenure as Head of the National Office.
These included the rollout of Computer-Based WASSCE, serialisation of question papers and introduction of a Digital Electronic Marking System.
He also oversaw the Digital Certificate Portal, WAEC E-Study Platform, Digital Records Archive, as well as systems for examination logistics, timetable management and monitoring examiners’ attendance.
WAEC described Dangut as an astute scholar with publications in international and national journals and said he had presented keynote and other papers at international and national conferences.
