Chairmen of the 23 local government areas (LGAs) of Benue State are set to adopt a common approach to tackling insecurity in their respective areas.
The move follows the development of a People-Centred Public Safety (PCPS) model by the Benue State Bureau of Homeland Security and Lawyers Alert under the Association of Local Governments of Nigeria (ALGON).
President of Lawyers Alert, Rommy Mom, said the model would involve communities in identifying and responding to security concerns through early warning and response, dialogue, mediation and information sharing.
According to him, the initiative would also provide a framework for local government councils to work with residents, government agencies and security institutions in addressing security challenges.
Following the adoption of the approach as a statewide security strategy, the 23 local government chairmen are expected to meet in Makurdi on Wednesday to examine lessons from its implementation in Guma, Katsina-Ala and Agatu LGAs.
Benue has continued to experience security challenges, including banditry and farmers-herders clashes, despite measures by the federal and state governments to address the situation.
