Pastor Bolaji Idowu has sparked conversations on social media after his remarks about women’s expectations in relationships, including demands for a car, an iPhone and a monthly allowance of ₦1 million from a potential partner.
The pastor addressed the controversy in a statement explaining the context of a teaching session on relationship expectations involving a 26-year-old woman and a man at a similar stage of life.
According to him, the discussion focused on what women should reasonably expect from potential partners, taking into account their age, financial capacity and stage of life.
During the conversation, a female congregant made a comment that prompted him to ask her twice to repeat herself, after which other members of the congregation echoed her response.
Clarifying the incident, Pastor Bolaji stressed that the exchange should not be interpreted as reflecting the views of every woman in the church.
He said the central message was the distinction between maintaining standards in a relationship and setting expectations that may not be realistic for the individuals involved.
“This was never about telling women not to have standards. It was about understanding that expectations should also be grounded in reality,” he explained.
The pastor’s clarification has added to the online conversation about financial expectations, relationship standards and the responsibilities of men and women in dating.
The phrase “Men Dey!” has also featured in reactions to the discussion, as social media users weigh in on what partners should reasonably expect from one another.
