US Midterm: ‘Republicans Made A Choice And Followed Trump Over The Cliff’ – Schumer

United States Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer has described President Donald Trump as “the worst president ever,” accusing Republicans of worsening the economic hardship faced by American families following the Democrats’ victory in the midterm elections.

Schumer made the remarks during his victory speech after the Democratic Party reclaimed control of both chambers of Congress, declaring that Republicans had paid the price for their decision to align themselves with Trump and his policies.

He accused the Republicans of following Trump despite the impact of his administration’s policies on the cost of electricity, healthcare and other essential goods.

“Then the Republicans embraced Trump, the worst president ever. Republicans made a choice and followed Trump over the cliff,” Schumer said.

He argued that while Trump sometimes focused on what he described as irrelevant issues, his administration also implemented policies that increased the financial burden on American households.

“Some of the time he talked about extraneous things that were ridiculous, but much of the time he implemented things that raised their costs on electricity, on health care, on goods,” he said.

“Republicans had a choice of following Trump over the cliff, even though Trump policies made American families’ pain much worse. We never wavered. We listened to the American people, what they wanted,” he added.

Schumer also credited Democratic candidates for their commitment to the party’s campaign, saying many of those recruited had other promising opportunities but chose to contest the elections because they believed their country needed them.

“Every one of them that we recruited had great other opportunities, but they ran out of patriotism. They knew their country needed them. They knew in many cases, in every case, they were the best candidate for their state,” he said.

The Democratic leader further said the party’s victory was driven by its decision to engage directly with voters, listen to their concerns and reflect their demands in its campaign.

He said Democratic candidates visited voters in their homes, including their kitchens and living rooms, to understand the issues affecting them, accusing Republicans of failing to pay attention to the electorate.

“We talked to them. We sat down in their kitchens, in their living rooms and said, ‘What should we do?’ And they told us and we listened. We listened, they didn’t,” Schumer said.

Describing the outcome as a major political shift, he said Americans had dismantled the Republican electoral advantage, paving the way for a significant transformation of the Senate political landscape.

“The American people reduced the red brick wall to a pile of bricks,” he said.

Schumer added that the results had produced what he described as a generational remaking of the Senate electoral map, with implications for American politics both in the immediate future and for generations to come.

He, however, acknowledged that the election victory came with expectations, urging Democrats to translate the confidence placed in them by voters into meaningful political and policy outcomes.

“Americans voted for change and now Democrats must deliver,” he said.
