“Buhari left office penniless but his integrity remains,” said spokesman Garba Shehu

. Mallam Garba Shehu, spokesman for former President Muhammadu Buhari, said his boss’ integrity remains intact despite not having accumulated wealth when he left office.

Speaking to journalists on Tuesday after a press conference to announce the upcoming release of his new book, President Says: Lessons from a Presidential Spokesperson, Shehu stressed that Buhari never accepted bribes during his tenure and did not have any hidden assets. Abuja “Buhari is penniless, penniless,” Shehu explained. “Since Buhari left office, not a single journalist has called me and said, ‘We are contacting the media’ to get my reaction. I am sleeping well now.”

Shehu, who served as the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity during Buhari’s presidency, said the 260-page book depicts the “tough times” of working in the nation’s highest office. He noted that the book is also intended to serve as a resource for students, media practitioners and policy researchers.

On Buhari’s much-criticised distance from the media, Shehu defended his “patron” as a very private and knowledgeable figure.

“Buhari is one of the most avid readers in Nigeria. He reads all the newspapers. He asks for the newspaper every morning,” Shehu said. “Buhari does not give interviews to the media because he is not a showman, he wants to influence people with his work.”

He also spoke about the ongoing controversy surrounding Buhari’s academic qualifications, saying that the fuss over his academic qualifications was politically motivated and long settled.

“I did not go there

because the matter was settled,” Shehu explained. “Buhari is a product of politics and he was exonerated because of the testimony that was found. He was the Minister of Military Affairs at the time. The allegation was a product of politics. The School of Government[in the book] was burnt down. Some officials were punished because they were used by politicians.” Katsina Shehu expressed the hope that history would judge Buhari’s tenure more fairly.

“People will see if Buhari did his best. History will be kind to Buhari,” he said. When he came into office, the main issue was haram. The crisis faced by farmers and herders dated back to colonial times. He tried his best, but some governors did not trust him. The upcoming book also covers Shehu’s early days as spokesman for former Vice President Atiku Abubakar during President Obasanjo’s second term (2003-2007). He details how political tensions within the presidential palace endangered his life. “During the second term, President Obasanjo declared war on the Vice President during a serious crisis that triggered threats, including fears of death,” Shehu recalled. “As revealed in the book, the Vice President himself went into hiding.”

According to him, the book also recounts his ordeal as a subject of security agency attention, including stints with the Department of State Security (DSS), serving time in Kuje Prison, and a two-year trial. Boko
