The Rivers State House of Assembly on Thursday stepped down the consideration of the 2026–2028 Medium-Term Expenditure Framework (MTEF) sent to it by Governor Siminalayi Fubara.
Politics Nigeria reports that the request was presented to the lawmakers during an emergency plenary session in Port Harcourt, where they met to read the official communication from the executive arm.
The emergency sitting marked a major turn of events as the lawmakers reconvened for the very first time in more than three months. Legislative activities had been frozen since March when the House sharply rejected four commissioner nominees forwarded by the Governor.
During the session, the Speaker of the House, Martin Amaewhule, confirmed that the assembly received the document containing the strategic economic projections. He explained to the floor that the current document was arriving behind schedule, stating that the state layout ought to have been presented in September 2025 according to standard legislative timelines.
He added that the chamber last handled a similar medium-term fiscal document in 2022 under the previous administration of Nyesom Wike.
Despite the delay, Amaewhule expressed readiness to thoroughly look at the blueprint in order to safeguard the economic progression and overall interests of the people of Rivers State.
However, following a formal motion moved by one of the members, the lawmakers unanimously agreed to put off further deliberations on the policy document to a later date.
The legislature subsequently adjourned its emergency sitting until June 26 to revisit the economic framework. This sudden development is viewed as a vital step towards clearing the political logjam around the state’s budget process after an extended period of intense rivalry between the executive branch and the assembly.
