Troops of Sector 2 of Joint Task Force North-West Operation Fansan Yamma have dismantled a suspected illegal arms manufacturing syndicate and recovered locally fabricated rifles in Kebbi state.
The operation, conducted on the strength of intelligence, led to the arrest of two suspected arms manufacturers and suppliers.
According to a statement issued on Thursday by Lt Col Aliyu Danja, spokesperson of the joint task force, the suspects were allegedly involved in producing and supplying locally made firearms to terrorist groups operating in the state.
Lt Col Danja said troops raided a secluded compound allegedly used by the syndicate to evade security surveillance, adding that a search of the premises led to the recovery of five locally fabricated AK-47 rifles.
The military said the operation was carried out in collaboration with other security agencies, stressing that the suspects are in custody and are undergoing preliminary interrogation.
It added that investigations are ongoing to identify other members of the syndicate, their financiers and collaborators.
The military said the operation forms part of ongoing efforts under Operation Fansan Yamma to disrupt terrorist logistics, curb the proliferation of illicit arms and dismantle criminal networks across the North-West.
The theatre command commended the troops and partner security agencies involved in the operation and urged residents to continue providing credible intelligence to support security operations in the region.
