Former Social Democratic Party (SDP) governorship candidate in Gombe State in the 2023 election, Kelmi Jeacob Lazarus, has defected to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
Announcing his decision on Tuesday, Kelmi also declared his support for the party’s 2027 governorship candidate, Professor Isa Ali Pantami.
He said his decision came after what he described as extensive consultations with his supporters.
The politician who is also a former SDP chairman in the state said he joined the PDP because he believes Pantami possesses the vision, competence, integrity and leadership qualities needed to move the state forward.
He described the former Minister as the most qualified candidate in the race and urged his supporters and the people of Gombe State to rally behind the PDP in the interest of the state’s development.
“I have carefully considered the current political realities and consulted widely with my supporters before taking this decision. I am convinced that Professor Isa Ali Pantami has the capacity to provide purposeful leadership and advance the development of Gombe State,” Kelmi said.
The PDP faithful in the state described Kelmi’s move as a major boost to the party ahead of the 2027 governorship election.
