‘227,’ ‘Sanford And Son’ Star Hal Williams Dies At 91

Veteran American actor Hal Williams, best known for his memorable roles in the hit sitcoms 227 and Sanford and Son, has died at the age of 91.

Williams died on July 15 at his home in Rancho Mirage, California. His representative confirmed his passing, while reports said the actor died of natural causes after experiencing health issues.

The beloved actor became a household name portraying Officer “Smitty” Smith on Sanford and Son, before winning over audiences again as Lester Jenkins, husband to Marla Gibbs’ character, on the NBC sitcom 227. His performance helped make the series one of the defining Black sitcoms of the 1980s and introduced audiences to a young Regina King.

Williams enjoyed a career spanning more than five decades, appearing in numerous television classics, including The Waltons, Good Times, Moesha, Night Court, Parks and Recreation and the recent Matlock revival. His film credits included Private Benjamin, Guess Who and Flight.

Tributes have poured in from colleagues and fans, with former 227 co-star Jackée Harry remembering him as a gracious man whose portrayal of loving Black fathers left a lasting impact on television.

Widely admired for his warmth, humour and trailblazing contributions to American television, Williams leaves behind a legacy that helped shape generations of Black storytelling on screen. He is survived by his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
