Shakira Rewards Volunteers, Workers and Colombian Business Owners With Free Concert Tickets

Global music star Shakira has honoured everyday heroes in New York by inviting them to attend her upcoming concert in Brooklyn as a token of appreciation for their contributions to the city and the ongoing FIFA World Cup.

Ahead of her July 21 performance, the Colombian singer presented complimentary tickets to three groups: volunteers at Lulla’s who have supported earthquake relief efforts in Venezuela, union workers whose efforts helped keep World Cup operations running smoothly, and Colombian restaurant owners who participated in New York City’s World Cup dining initiative introduced by Mayor Zohran Mamdani.

Explaining the gesture, Shakira said many of the people responsible for making the tournament a success often work behind the scenes without receiving public recognition.

“So much of what made this World Cup special is the work that most fans never see: the thousands of hotel rooms kept clean, all of the stadiums that worked so smoothly,” she said, adding that she wanted to thank New Yorkers whose dedication made the global event memorable.

New York World Cup Czar Maya Handa described the recipients as the backbone of the city, praising Shakira for giving them an opportunity to celebrate and enjoy a special evening.

Some of those recognised also expressed their appreciation. Hotel worker Biviana Pereira Leiva, who relocated from Barranquilla to New York a decade ago, said the recognition from the Colombian superstar was deeply meaningful, while Queens-based union member Sandra Leiton applauded Shakira for celebrating hardworking immigrant women and proudly representing her Colombian roots.
