GSS Kwali Alumni Celebrates 44 Years of Excellence, Elects National Executives 

The Government Secondary School (GSS) Kwali Alumni Association, has celebrated over four decades of academic excellence and achievements, highlighting the contributions of its former students who have distinguished themselves in various fields of endeavour in Nigeria and across the diaspora.

The celebration, marking 44 years of the school’s existence and impact, also witnessed the election of the first democratically elected National Executive Council of the alumni association to coordinate its activities, strengthen unity among members and deepen engagement with old students at home and abroad.

At the election, Surveyor Abayomi Kayode Otitoju emerged as the National President, while Ike-Onuigbo Chinyere Gift was elected National Vice President.

Legal practitioner Ekpo Samuel emerged as the National Secretary, while Immaculate Unekwu Offor was elected Assistant National Secretary.

Leonard James, a banker, was elected National Treasurer, while Aisha Mohammed Mundi emerged as National Financial Secretary.

Ibrahim Shekwoduza was elected National Organising Secretary, while Blessing Rufus emerged as the National Public Relations Officer of the association.

The newly elected leadership is expected to provide a stronger platform for networking among alumni, mobilise members towards the development of their alma mater and promote initiatives aimed at improving the academic and welfare needs of students.

Government Secondary School Kwali, popularly known as GSS Kwali, was established in 1981 and has, over the years, produced generations of graduates who have gone on to make significant contributions in different professions and sectors of the Nigerian economy.

According to members of the association, the school’s more than four decades of existence have been characterised by the emergence of leaders, professionals and change-makers serving Nigeria and contributing to development in different parts of the world.

They explained that as graduates of the school became increasingly dispersed across different professions, states and countries, the need for a strong platform to reconnect old students and coordinate their contributions to the school became necessary.

The alumni recalled that the journey towards establishing a unified association began with informal reunions organised by different graduating sets before discussions intensified in December 2019 on the need to establish a national body that would bring all former students under one umbrella.

The process eventually culminated in the establishment of the Government Secondary School Kwali Old Students Association (GOSSKWOSA), with 2026 marking another major milestone following the emergence of its first democratically elected National Executive Council.

Members of the association said the vision behind GOSSKWOSA is anchored on the principle: “Unite the past, empower the present, and build the future of GSS Kwali.”

They said the association seeks to build a strong, united and impactful alumni body capable of giving back to GSS Kwali while creating opportunities and support systems that would enable members of the alumni community to succeed.

According to them, the association’s mission is also to reunite and connect graduates from different sets, from the earliest generation of students to the present, irrespective of where they reside in Nigeria or abroad.

They added that the alumni body intends to leverage the collective experience, expertise and resources of its members to support the rebuilding and development of the school, promote academic excellence and contribute to the welfare of students.

The association expressed optimism that the emergence of the new national leadership would usher in a new phase of greater coordination, inclusiveness and participation among old students, while strengthening the bond between the alumni and their alma mater.

It also reiterated its commitment to preserving the legacy of GSS Kwali and ensuring that the institution continues to produce students capable of making meaningful contributions to national development and society at large.
