FG Okays Nasarawa Varsity’s Takeover Of Federal Medical Centre Keffi

The federal government, Nasarawa State Government and Nasarawa State University, Keffi (NSUK), on Tuesday signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for the takeover of the Federal Medical Centre (FMC), Keffi, as the university’s teaching hospital.

The agreement, signed at the Conference Hall of the Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare in Abuja, marks a significant milestone in the university’s drive to strengthen medical education and expand healthcare services in Nasarawa State.

The Minister of State for Health and Social Welfare, Dr. Iziaq Adekunle Salako, presided over the signing ceremony.

The Director of Health Services and the Director of Legal Services of the Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare signed the agreement on behalf of the federal government, while the Nasarawa State Commissioner for Education, John Mamman, the Vice-Chancellor of NSUK, Professor Sa’adatu Hassan Liman, and the Registrar, Dr. Bala Ahmed, signed on behalf of the state government and the university.

Speaking at the ceremony, the Commissioner for Education and the Vice-Chancellor described the agreement as the beginning of a new chapter for the university and the state.

They thanked the Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare for the partnership, saying the conversion of FMC Keffi into the university’s teaching hospital would significantly enhance the training of medical and allied health sciences students.

Professor Liman described the development as “a dream come true,” assuring the ministry that the university would ensure the effective utilisation of the facility for quality teaching, research and healthcare delivery.

She said the institution remained committed to maximising the teaching hospital to produce highly skilled healthcare professionals and improve access to quality healthcare services.

Also speaking, Commissioner for Education John Mamman, said the takeover of FMC Keffi would complement Governor Abdullahi Sule’s sustained efforts to improve education, healthcare, agriculture and industrial development across the state.

He added that establishing a teaching hospital would strengthen the state’s human capital development agenda by providing practical clinical training for future healthcare professionals.
