Governor Abba Inaugurates Disease Control Centre to Combat Cholera, Lassa Fever in Kano

Kano State Governor, Abba Yusuf, on Monday inaugurated the Kano State Centre for Disease Control as part of efforts to strengthen the state’s response to infectious disease outbreaks.

The governor said the facility would coordinate the prevention, surveillance and control of communicable diseases, including cholera, meningitis, Lassa fever, tuberculosis and HIV/AIDS.
Speaking at the commissioning ceremony in Kano, Yusuf described the project as a major investment in the state’s healthcare system and said it fulfilled his administration’s commitment to establish a dedicated disease control centre.

“Today, by the grace of Allah, we are commissioning this gigantic health project, which was conceptualised and executed by the present administration,” he said.

He expressed optimism that the centre would enhance the state’s capacity to detect and respond swiftly to disease outbreaks while improving public health outcomes.

The governor also commended development partners and officials of the Ministry of Health for their support in establishing the facility.

“I pray that this project will be judiciously utilised for the benefit of the good people of Kano State,” Yusuf added before officially inaugurating the centre.

Earlier, the Commissioner for Health said the facility was fully funded, constructed and equipped by the Kano State Government under Yusuf’s administration.

He described the centre as a strategic institution for tackling infectious diseases that spread from person to person, noting that it would strengthen surveillance, emergency preparedness and outbreak response across the state.

The commissioner stated that the governor had fulfilled his campaign promise to establish the centre, stressing that it would play a critical role in protecting residents against recurring outbreaks of communicable diseases.

He also acknowledged the support of development partners, including the World Health Organisation, AFENET, FHI 360, CORE Group, Lafiya and eHealth Africa, as well as public health experts who contributed to the successful establishment of the centre.
