Kano Assembly Suspends Three LG Chairmen Over Alleged Misconduct

The Kano State House of Assembly has suspended the chairmen of Rogo, Bagwai and Bebeji local government areas for three months over allegations of financial mismanagement, abuse of office and violations of local government regulations.

The suspension was announced during plenary on Tuesday following the presentation of a report by the House Committee on Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs.

Presenting the report on behalf of the committee chairman, Ali Mohammed Tiga, the member representing Dala Constituency, Lawan Hussaini Dala, said the action followed investigations into petitions and complaints lodged against the affected council chairmen.

The suspended officials are Abubakar Mustafa of Rogo Local Government Area, Bello Abdullahi Gadanya of Bagwai Local Government Area and Dr. Alhassan Salisu of Bebeji Local Government Area.

Dala told lawmakers that preliminary findings indicated allegations of diversion of public funds and other administrative infractions in the affected local governments.

He said the three-month suspension would enable the committee to conduct a comprehensive investigation into the allegations and ensure the protection of public funds and assets belonging to the councils.

According to him, the Assembly’s decision is aimed at guaranteeing transparency and accountability in local government administration while safeguarding the interests of residents.

The House maintained that the action was taken in line with its constitutional oversight and investigative powers as provided under the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, as amended.

The Assembly said it would determine further action upon the conclusion of the investigation and submission of the committee’s final report.
