Tinubu Commissions Africa’s First Barefoot Renewable Energy College in Kogi

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on Tuesday commissioned the Barefoot Renewable Energy College (BARECKS) at the Confluence University of Science and Technology (CUSTECH), Osara, Kogi State, describing it as the first institution of its kind in Africa.

Represented by Vice President Kashim Shettima, the President said the college was established to provide practical, hands-on training in solar and renewable energy technologies for rural communities and aspiring technicians across Africa.

He said the initiative aligns with the Federal Government’s commitment to expanding access to renewable energy, developing technical skills and creating employment opportunities for young Nigerians.

Kogi State Governor Ahmed Usman Ododo commended the Tinubu administration for establishing the renewable energy college, describing it as a strategic investment in youth empowerment and sustainable development.

Ododo said the institution would build the capacity of youths in renewable energy technology, promote skills acquisition, create jobs and contribute to the state’s economic growth.

He urged young people in the state and beyond to take advantage of the opportunities offered by the college to acquire practical skills that would improve their livelihoods.

Also speaking, the Director-General and Chief Executive Officer of the Energy Commission of Nigeria, Mustapha Abdullahi, praised President Tinubu for his commitment to promoting sustainable renewable energy education in the country.

Abdullahi described the commissioning of the college as a major milestone in advancing renewable energy education, technical skills development and community empowerment across Africa.
