Princess Eugenie’s New Baby Reshuffles British Royal Line of Succession

The birth of Princess Eugenie’s third child has triggered the latest change to the British royal line of succession, with several members of the Royal Family moving down one place.

Princess Eugenie, 36, and her husband, Jack Brooksbank, welcomed a baby girl on August 3. Although the couple’s children do not hold royal titles, they are all eligible to inherit the throne. The newborn, whose name has yet to be announced, now takes 15th place in the line of succession.

The latest addition means Prince Edward, the King’s youngest brother, drops to 16th in line, while his children, Princess Anne, her children and grandchildren, and everyone below them also move down one position.

Princess Eugenie remains 12th in the order of succession, followed by her three children in birth order. Ahead of her are her elder sister, Princess Beatrice, and Beatrice’s daughters, Sienna Elizabeth Mapelli Mozzi and Athena Elizabeth Rose Mapelli Mozzi.

King Charles continues as Britain’s monarch, with Prince William first in line to the throne. William is followed by his children—Prince George, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis—while Prince Harry occupies fifth place, followed by Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet. Prince Andrew also remains in the line of succession despite no longer holding royal titles or undertaking official royal duties.

The Royal Family has not yet updated the official line of succession on its website, as such changes are often made several weeks after a royal birth.

Under the Succession to the Crown Act 2013, the newest royal arrival will retain her place in the line of succession even if Princess Eugenie and Jack Brooksbank later welcome a son. The legislation ended the centuries-old system that gave male heirs priority over their older sisters, ensuring that birth order alone determines succession.
