Digital Zakat Will Lift Millions Out Of Poverty – Sultan

The Sultan of Sokoto and President-General of the Nigerian Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs, Muhammadu Sa’adu Abubakar III, has expressed confidence that the adoption of digital technology in Zakat administration will help lift millions of Nigerians out of poverty through transparent and efficient distribution of charitable funds.

The Sultan stated this during the unveiling of the eZakat App and the inauguration of the Board of Trustees of the Ummah Zakat Foundation in Abuja, yesterday.

He was represented by the Shehu Usman Chindo-Yamusa III.

He described Zakat as more than an act of charity, saying it remained one of the five pillars of Islam and a powerful instrument for justice, equity, compassion and social protection.

According to him, the establishment of the Ummah Zakat Foundation marks a significant step towards aligning Islamic obligations with the opportunities provided by modern technology.

The Sultan said the digital platform would enable Muslims to fulfil their Zakat obligations with ease while ensuring transparency and confidence that donations reach deserving beneficiaries.

He said, “Through the digital platform, Muslims are now empowered to fulfil this sacred obligation with ease, transparency and the assurance that their Zakat reaches those most deserving.”

The monarch charged members of the newly inaugurated Board of Trustees to uphold Sharia principles, ensure accountability and protect the integrity of the organisation.
