Jubilant Sykes Son Pleads Not Guilty To Father’s Murder

The son of baritone singer Jubilant Sykes has pleaded not guilty to the December 2025 murder of his father.

Micah Sykes, 31, faces a charge of murder with special circumstances involving the use of a deadly weapon and the infliction of great bodily injury on a vulnerable adult over the age of 60. A preliminary court hearing has been scheduled for September 2, 2026.

The late opera singer, aged 71, was killed inside his home in Santa Monica, California, with the Los Angeles County Medical Examiner subsequently ruling his death a homicide.

An autopsy report released in July revealed that Sykes sustained multiple sharp and blunt force injuries. According to court records, his wife, Cecelia Sykes, told police she witnessed the attack after exiting the shower upon hearing her husband call for help.

Police recovered a curved knife and a weight at the scene, with toxicology reports showing no presence of illegal or prescribed drugs in the singer’s system.

During a February court appearance, Micah Sykes interrupted proceedings to ask for his mother, declaring that prosecutors were not telling the truth. Los Angeles County Superior Court Judge Theresa R. McGonigle subsequently ordered him held on $2 million bail.

Commenting on the case, Los Angeles County District Attorney Nathan J. Hochman expressed condolences to the community while emphasising the prosecutor’s office’s commitment to holding perpetrators of elder abuse accountable.

Jubilant Sykes was an internationally acclaimed baritone who earned a Grammy nomination for his performance in Leonard Bernstein’s Mass and performed at world-renowned venues, including Carnegie Hall and the Metropolitan Opera.
